Japan Automobile Manufacturers' Association, Inc., announced on April 8, 2010 that the car ownership rate for households in Japan fell to 75.8 percent in 2009 during the economic slump. The rate hovered around 79 percent between 1999 and 2007.
The figure is based on the results of a 2009 survey on the automobile market with 3,926 valid responses and a response rate of 37.5 percent. Targeting households in Japan, the survey is conducted every two years by a questionnaire about automobile ownership, intention to buy automobiles in the future, etc.
